Farewell to Burt: The Iconic Crocodile Dundee Star and Wildlife Ambassador

Story By Mitchell Smith
Hello everybody. Burt, the renowned saltwater crocodile who gained international fame for his role in the 1986 film “Crocodile Dundee”, has died at the age of 90. He passed away peacefully over the weekend at Crocosaurus Cove in Darwin, Australia, where he had resided since 2008. Captured in the 1980s from the Reynolds River in Australia’s Northern Territory, Burt was named after actor Burt Reynolds.
His brief yet memorable appearance in Crocodile Dundee—where he lunged from the water in a scene with actress Linda Kozlowski—left a lasting impression on audiences worldwide. Beyond his cinematic fame, Burt became a significant ambassador for wildlife education at Crocosaurus Cove. Known for his fiery temperament and independent nature, he was a favorite among visitors and staff alike. Measuring over 16 feet in length and weighing more than 1,500 pounds, his commanding presence embodied the untamed spirit of Australia’s wildlife. In tribute to Burt’s extraordinary life and contributions, Crocosaurus Cove plans to install a commemorative sign in his honor.
His passing marks the end of an incredible era, but his legacy will continue to inspire awe and respect for Australia’s natural heritage.
